What I do when I visit the Kotel

This past Shabbat Melissa and I had theĀ privilege of hosting our married friends (A and Y) who are visiting Israel for a few weeks. A and I were talking about the Kotel and she asked me what I do there when I go. Such a great question.
This is generally what I do at the Kotel:
I go to the little indoor box on the women’s side that seats five women.
Depending on the time of day, I either say mincha or maariv and then I say Tehillim. The amount of Tehillim depend on if I pray beforehand or not.
After that I go up to the wall and think about the world and my life.
I sit and stare at the wall for a bit and then I make my way either to the bus stop or to the stairs that go up to the Jewish Quarter.
As I walk backwards when I leave the Kotel plaza, I look at the wall and the people there and think about how lucky I am that I live in Israel. That we are able to go to this area. How the Beit Hamikdash used to be there and no longer is. And then I think about all the Jews who haven’t been to Israel and the Kotel, etc.
That’s basically it.
