Isn’t this what your gap year is for?

A few days ago I met up with my roommate from last year and told her some of the goals on the list. I mentioned planting a tree, finding a chavruta, finding a rabbi, going to a new community once a month, etc. … Her response was: “Isn’t that what seminary is for?”
Yes.
Unlike seminary though, which has a forced structure and doesn’t give you real freedom, this year does. This is actual life. These goals and activities, be them desires or yearnings or something else, come solely from within and require my own initiative. No one else suggested these or is organizing these.
Basically, I haven’t been doing these things before because without having that set structure of seminary I let myself fall into a different routine and put everything off. I was waiting for someone or something to create the structure. In doing so I lost track of what I enjoy most and what is really good for me.
That is what I’m realizing.
